Ang Pamana: The Inheritance made its international premiere at the 26th annual Louis Vuitton Hawaii International Film Festival this October 2006. In attendance were director Romeo Candido, producer/cast Caroline Mangosing, cast members Phoemela Baranda, Darrel Gamotin, Nicco Lorenzo Garcia, along with myself (Christine), Jun Mangosing, and Catherine Mangosing.

Both screenings played to a full house at the Regal Dole Cannery Theatre in Honolulu. Because of the late hour of the first screening, the Q + A with the director, producer and cast occured before the show and comprised mainly of short introductions and brief comments from each person regarding their experience working on the film. After the show, the audience sustained their applause until the very last credit rolled on the screen. Many audience members stayed behind to greet the cast + crew personally -- both Filipinos and non-Filipinos alike expressing the ways in which they related and/or were affected by the film.

Despite the second screening's coinciding time slot with the festival's awards ceremony, the theatre was packed once again. As with the first screening the film's rapid shifts between drama, comedy and suspense elicited laughter, surprised gasps and shrill screams from the audience in all the right spots. Most of the audience remained for the Q + A, which, this time, occcured after the screening. Questions from the audience included inquiries about where the soundtrack could be purchased, whether the film will be distributed in theatres or DVD and where, and on a humorous note, a query about whether the actor who played the character "Tommy" was "crazy" in real-life. Despite generating laughter from the cast + crew and the audience (actor Nicco Lorenzo Garcia was not present at this screening), this question was a huge compliment to Nicco for his convincing portrayal of a mentally-handicapped man. Comments included one from a non-Filipino man who was greatly enthused by the film and declared how sure he was that the film would be a succesful hit. Another comment, this time from a Filipino mother, observed how accurately Darrel Gamotin's character captured the culture shock experienced by 1st and 2nd generation Filipino-American/Canadian youth upon visiting their parents' homeland for the first time. She went on to remark that she would definitely recommend the movie to her children, whom she was sure could relate to the film.

After the Q + A, again, audience members were lined up to greet the cast + crew -- snapping photos, requesting autographs and sending congratulations all around.

Apart from the screenings, myself and the rest of the Inheritance crew took full advantage of our time in Hawaii (as evidenced in the photos below) -- in the sun, on the beach, at the endless profusion of bars and restaurants lining the shore of Waikiki beach, and at the numerous parties hosted by the film festival at various locations throughout Waikiki and Honolulu. The festival was attended by a host of talented Asian filmmakers from all around the world and the festival parties served as prime "get-to-know-each-other" venues where valuable connections were gained.

All in all, the festival was an immensely positive experience and Hawaii a most hospitable, not to mention, BEAUTIFUL back-drop for a film festival.

Its been a long, long while but much has happened over the course of the summer for this project. The final cut of the film, complete with 5.1 dolby surround sound, an original score performed by an orchestra and original music written and performed by the director, Romeo Candido, is finally complete and ready for release!

The film will WORLD PREMIER at the HAWAII INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL in Honolulu, OCTOBER 19th to the 29th 2006, so if you or anyone you know lives in Honolulu, definitely keep your eyes open and check it out!

The HIFF will be followed by the VANCOUVER ASIAN FILM FESTIVAL, NOVEMBER 1st-5th, where Ang Pamana: The Inheritance will serve as the fest's closing night film.

And of course, the film's long-awaited release in the Philippines is set for NOVEMBER 22nd, 2006 in Manila. The film will be released in theatres nationwide.

in regards to release dates, i beleive its projected to release in manila theatres this halloween 2006. in north america, its not yet confirmed but it could possiby premier at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. i just realized (thank nicole) that i never posted the plot synopsis for this film... here it is. maybe now the photos will actually make sense. :)

Johnny De Jesus is a typical Canadian teen-ager; despondent, rebellious, and has no regard for his family. When the De Jesus-Reyes family gets word that their family matriarch, Lola (Grandmother) Nena has died, Johnny, and his prissy older sister Anna are in charge of representing their parents in Manila for the reading of their Lola’s last will and testament. Johnny, a first time balikbayan, sees Manila with foreign eyes; from the poorest squatters to the richest of the gated village mansions. Johnny is introduced to his cousin Vanessa, a Manila junior socialite who shares Johnny’s taste for drugs and trouble. At the reading of the will the three grandchildren of Lola Nena are awarded the deed to the family farm on an island in rural Bulacan. After a bumpy two-hour ride out of the city, shuttled by their family driver, Dante, they arrive at the 19-hectare property, miles away from the comforts of the modern world. The land is as vast, lush, and teeming with insects’ hum. But things are anything but placid in this provincial landscape.

Things take a turn when Johnny comes to the reluctant realization that supernatural forces are at work on the land and the folklore that haunted his childhood are real. First are the sightings of his Lola’s ghost, which Johnny tries to dismiss as drug-induced hallucinations. Is Johnny falling for local superstition in his stoned stupor? Is someone trying to poison them or are there truly Duwendes on the property cursing them. What is the real reason why the local farmers stay away from the property? What is the dark secret that Lola Nena took to the grave and left for Johnny to discover?

Set in Canada and the Philippines, Ang Pamana: The Inheritance is the story of the fears we carry and the ones that refuse to be left behind. It is a modern horror story drawing from age-old Filipino folklore primed to frighten a whole new generation.

i'm back in TO....trapped in the foggy haze of a sleeping-pill induced (unsuccessful) attempt at warding off jetlag, but home, nonetheless. i've still got a ton of photos from the bulacan location to post so do look out for the updates. despite not being physically present in the philippines for the remainder of the shoot, i will be posting the photos shot by the set photographers, Zal and Patok. to anyone from the cast and crew peeping at this blog....i miss you all and i SO wish i was still there. by the way, i left my shades on set so if anyone finds them, Toni-girl can have them :)

i've lost count of how many cigarettes i've smoked, how many cups of coffee i've drank, how many times i've been bitten by mosquitoes and how many hours i've spent in a car.....

its funny that i started this blog as a means of documenting the creation of this film from my perspective and yet i haven't posted anything since the shoot actually started. considering i've left my place at arond 6-7am every morning and not returned before 2am almost everyday is good enough reason i think.

today was my last day on set. i leave to return to toronto bright and early monday morning. i can't believe how quickly the last 2 weeks have flown by and yet i feel like i've been here forever. i'm still having a hard time accepting that i actually have to leave, considering the shoot is still 11 days away from completion and that this has been, hands-down, the most amazing experience of my life.

i won't say much more cuz its almost 3:30am and my day started 21 hours ago. i think the photos i will be posting tomorrow will say much more than i could describe with words anyway. the initial phase of the website will also be on-line this week.

dammit. i can't believe i'm leaving.

manila's reality is poorly disguised by gargantuan entertainment and shopping complexes built in imitation of the western world, but behind all the gleaming chrome, glass and perfectly maniucured palm trees, this is manila:

so monday is when the work really began. monday morning, i got a ride out to alabang (another city just under an hour away from manila) where the GC4 building is located.GC4 is an audio, video/film and 3D animation production house equipped with top-of-the-line equipment (the geek in me got really excited over the design lab where row upon row of G5's and gigantic flat screen diplays could be found) including a recording studio large enough for an entire orchestra, and everything else you would expect to find in such a place. GC4 will be responsible for all the post-production work for "The Inheritance," including the composition and recording of the score, the editing and the motion graphics/visual effects. i met quite a few of the GC4 team at the press conference the other night.

so when i got there, jamie, the director of the video editing department, set me up with a work station and i tried to get some work done. "Work" meaning trying to figure out how the hell i want the film's website to look. most times i work well under pressure and other times, i just don't. this was one of the "other" times.

later in the afternoon, jamie drove me out to the boondocks to meet the team that had been assigned to work with me on the website. The team members are all from a sister company of GC4's, called PC3 (they're quite fond of acronyms here in the Philippines, have you noticed?) the meeting was to be held at the home of the man who owns GC4, PC3 and is responsible for financing almost the entire budget for "The Inheritance." i've met this man before and he's a kindly, unassuming, older man....someone you'd never guess is the tycoon that he is. his home (which wasn't actually his real home but just his weekend home) was so incredible that i felt a little starstruck walking through it. i kept trying to restrain myself from drawing attention to my starstruckness by taking photographs but i couldn't help myself and ended up taking a few shots of the exterior. the interior was incredible but i couldn't bring myself to take photos inside too. the house was built onto the side of a cliff overlooking a bay and rolling hills of tropical jungle. no matter how many floors you went down (there were several floors), you could still see the view out of every window. there were several levels of terraces ( i only stepped onto 3 of them), an infinity pool, a sauna, guestrooms, a conference room (where our meeting was held) , several living rooms, an exercise room, a games room, a glass-walled dining room surrounded by a moat(!) full of swimming koi fish, etc etc etc.

the photos in order from top to bottom are: the conference room, the view from the pool terrace, a view of the pool from one of the upper terraces, the door going in to the steam room area, and the view from the lower terrace. geez. because the man owns so many companies, this house is basically for his employees to hang out in, for conferences, staff parties, etc. the house staff served us an afternoon snack on one of the terraces before our meeting began and what i found ironic was that we were fed sliced white bread, cheese whiz, slice upon slice of fried spam and instant coffee all served on fine china. hahaha ghetto styles in the lap of luxury.

so yeah, back to business. our meeting finally began and i met the team: two creative writers, two programmers, two designers, a project manager and jamie, the video editor guy. the meeting went quite smoothly despite the fact that i was pretty nervous. i've done lots of work in the past but i've never been in this position before where a whole team is looking at me to tell them what to do. they were all prepared with pad and pencil, a copy of the proposal for the website that i originally wrote for school and emailed to them when i was still in toronto, and the site map i also sent out a few weeks ago. the project manager told me that they had all been instructed to study the proposal i wrote and to review my website inorder to familiarize themeselves with my work. whoa. breathe, christine. i was so freaking nervous cuz all of a sudden i didn't know where to start and i felt this overwhelming sense of inadequacy. a part of me wanted to stand up and yell, "wait, you've got the wrong person!" nonetheless, i made it through the meeting, answered their questions, outlined a series of tasks to complete and set a date for the next meeting. everyone on the team is relatively young, i think (you can never really tell with filipinos) and very nice and enthusiastic about the project. i tried to get over the nervousness by telling myself i was just at school working on a group project but i'm still feeling pretty damn intimidated. the scope of this website is so huge and will take up all of the spring and summer. i will also be working on the print material accompanying the film's release, which is targeted for the 2006 Toronto Film Festival.
as of now, i still haven't figured how i want the website to look...my excuse is that i've been busy putting the digital sweatshop site together....but my next meeting is on friday so i gotta get crackin'. i've got this irresistable urge to go shopping today, however. must be the fact that i've been locked inside this computer room for the last two days, staring at this computer. its high time for some retail therapy! ;p

here's a shot of romeo's swanky new condo in makati...well, a corner of it at least. its got two HUGE bedrooms, each with its own bathroom and walk-in closet, all smack dab in the middle of makati's "downtown." all for MUCH less than CDN$1000/month. geez.

spent sunday night chilling there with the toronto constituent of the film's cast. everyone (including me) was still experiencing major jetlag so it was an early night. had dinner and indulged in a few bottles of 50-cent-apiece beer purchased from the nearby 7-11 with nicco and darrel. ahhhh, only in the philippines.... the beer combined with the oppressive heat made for a very light-headed me. i crashed that night as soon as my head hit my pillow.

1st day in manila

i arrived in manila yesterday morning. Walking out into 35 degree heat after a 22 hour plane ride from the other side of the world gave me the inclination to pass out but i thankfully held myself together. It was great to see my parents again, of course. Definitely a treat to see them for the second time in 3 months...an entire year usually passes between each visit with them. Lunch and a trip to the spa (to get my nails done and a massage....i'm such a princess!) followed. That evening, the press conference/dinner was held for The Inheritance film's cast and crew. The event was held in the backyard of someone's house, in one of the most amazing tropical gardens i've ever seen. The place was huge and packed with people, food, lights, cameras and mosquitoes. The entire cast (both Toronto and Manila based members) was present, as well as the production crew. After dinner, the director (Toronto-based Romeo Candido) went through the story and described all the characters in the film. A press conference followed where reporters from various broadcasters in the Philippines interviewed the cast members, the director and the producers. I had the chance to meet the cast and crew as well as alot of the people responsible for the post-production end. This included the socre composer, Gerard Salonga, who will be composing and conducting an actual orchestra (!) to create the film's score, the director of the editing team, the post-production supervisor as well as some of the members of the web team (programmers and designers) that I will be working with on the film's website. My first meeting with the entire team will be held on Monday evening so I'll be spending today and tomorrow creating some rough drafts for page layouts and finalizing the site map. The idea of actually directing and collaborating with an entire team is so exciting as well as a little intimidating. Shooting starts next week so I'm definitely looking forward to that.
